A Brief History of Massage

Possibly the oldest way of healing

Back to Top

Massage has been practised in the Middle and Far East since at least 3000BC and is probably the oldest therapy known to man. Physicians in ancient Greece were skilled in massaging stiff and painful joints and Hypocrites, The Father of Medicine' wrote in the 5th Century;

'The wav to health is to have a scented bath
and an oiled massage each day'

Massage became increasingly popular in Europe from the 19th Century onwards when the Swedish gymnast Per Henrik Ling evised the aesthetic and scientific principals of what is now called the Swedish Massage. Based on ancient massage practises it combines therapeutic massage exercised for muscles and joints.

In the 1970s the American massage therapist George Downing published 'The Massage Book' in which he formulated the idea of massage as a therapy, taking into account a person's whole being; his mental, physical and emotional make up. Since these two therapists discoveries massage has been rediscovered and grown into the art of creating and maintaining the best possible health for its devotees by in turn relaxing, stimulating and invigorating mind and body.

The Benefits of Massage

Emotional: In a state of calm metabolic rate blood pressure and heart rate all decrease and alpha waves (slow, frequent, synchronised brain waves commonly associated with the resting body) become dominant, the clients barriers are down and self-healing is taking place. Physical; Massage restores the body's organs to health, freeing the body's tissue of toxins and poisons. The endocrine and nervous system are calmed and stimulated accordingly through applied pressure on the spinal ganglion whilst the circulation and lymphatic systems are improved through the surface of the skin.

Massage can assist in:

*Alleviating stress* Improving circulation
"'Improving muscle tone*Detoxifying the body
*Improving respiration*Regulating digestion
*Muscular stress*Stimulating the lymphatic system
*Breaking fatty deposits and cellulite

Clinical Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy, like massage, dates back to the Egyptian times and involves the application of essential oils by massage. Essential oils, extracted from flowers, plants and trees are massaged into the body. The massage induces deep relaxation, which in addition to its own therapeutic benefits helps, both the absorption of the oils through the skin and to stimulate the oils own therapeutic properties.

The essential oils have bactericidal, sedative, stimulating and detoxifying actions. They rejuvenate both the skin and cellular levels, as well as having calming, balancing properties, which when applied through massage relieves stress and tension. Aromatherapy may be used to treat a large variety of conditions including:

* Stress and Tension

* Backache and Muscular pains

*Anxiety and Depression

* Self esteem

*Poor circulation

*Digestive disorders

*Headaches and Insomnia

* Rheumatism and Arthritis

A blend of 100 organic oils essential aromatic oils are selected by the practioner just for you, to help enhance your well being and stimulate your body's own self-healing properties.

Deep Tissue Massage

This is a much firmer type of massage, which helps to release muscular tension and to enhance the circulation. Rubifacent or anaselgic oils are often used depending on the nature of the problems the client is experiencing. Provides some long lasting stress relief and a fantastic feeling of well being. A real tonic for a hectic life.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

A firm but gentle rhythmic and deeply relaxing massage that helps in reducing water retention, filter excess fluid from the lymph nodes and to boost your immune system. It is a superb way to enhance (and especially start) any health or detox plan. Used with regular skin brushing can help diminish existing cellulite and to prevent more developing.

Indian Head Massage

Popular throughout the Indian sub-continent for over a thousand years, this shoulder, neck face and scalp massage soothes and comforts and re-balances the energy flow to produce a feeling of peace and tranquillity. Additional benefit can be gained from the (optional) use of oils to nourish the hair roots, promoting improvement in texture of hair and even reducing hair loss.

Reflexology

Reflexology uses pressure on the feet to access the natural energy paths of the body to promote good health, it releases tension, it improves nerve and blood supply and it restores the natural balance of your body.

In today's society so many health problems and conditions are stress related, reflexology addresses this by relaxing and harmonizing the body, the results of which can be extremely beneficial. Reflexology can help in a large variety of conditions including:

*Stress*Depression*Fatigue
*Headaches, Tinitus, Sinusitis
*Menstrual problems and hormonal imbalances
*Fertility problems*Respiratory problems
*Digestive problems; IBS, colitis

Reflexology is an adaptagin,, which puts the body back into its natural state of homeostasis.

Thermo-Auricular Therapy

A very relaxing way, using Hopi candles, to relieve the symptoms of sinusitis and tinitus.   Found to be particularly effective following a treatment of Reflexology.

The Bowen Technique

The technique consists of a series of moves across muscle, tendon and other soft tissue. The therapist uses fingers and thumbs on specific areas, applying gentle pressure to effect a movement of the tissue, which in effect sends a message to the brain and effects certain changes in the body. The majority of movements can be performed through light clothing. The only contraindications are individuals with breast implants who cannot have the breast movement and the coccyx position is not performed in the early stages of pregnancy.

If you are a new client it is advisable to arrive 15 mins prior to your appointment to fill in your personal profile and to give yourself time to unwind and relax before the treatment begins.

After a Treatment:

Following a treatment you are invited to relax and enjoy a cup of herbal tea or water before facing the outside world. It is recommended that you then should drink a further litre of water in the following 24 hours to assist in the flushing out of toxins. An increase in urination may be noticed or a feeling of drowsiness, these are just the natural way for the body to remove toxins and are not cause for alarm.

Cautions:

Clients with the following conditions are recommended to discuss with their G.P. and the therapist possible treatments or to avoid massage altogether.

*Heart conditions

*Epilepsy

*Diabetes

*Infectious disorders

*Cancer

*Medication

*Already having therapy

All treatments are confidential but clients may be advised to see their G.P. for guidance under certain circumstances. Therapists do not diagnose or treat specific medical conditions.
